The creature from the basement

19 octubre, 2024

When Sofia moved into her aunt’s old house, she thought it would be a new and exciting chapter in her life. The house, with its worn brick structure and barred windows, had a peculiar charm. However, from the very first day, a sense of oppression became evident. The atmosphere was thick with a dense silence, as if the house held dark secrets.

On the first night, while trying to sleep, she heard a faint whisper coming from the basement. Although she decided to ignore it, she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something more in the darkness. The next day, she decided to explore the house, and upon reaching the basement, she felt a chill run down her spine. The door was ajar, as if someone had been there before. With her heart pounding, she descended the stairs.

The basement was an oppressive place, with cold, damp walls. As her eyes adjusted to the dim light, she noticed an old wardrobe in a corner. She approached it cautiously, and when she opened it, she found only a few boxes of junk and dust. However, as she closed the wardrobe door, she heard a subtle noise behind her, like a scratch. She turned around, but there was nothing there.

Days passed, and the whispers intensified. Every time she approached the basement, she felt an inexplicable pull. Curiosity and fear battled within her. One night, she decided to record what was happening. With her phone in hand, she descended once more into the basement and began to record, speaking softly about the noises and her growing unease.

As she spoke, she heard a clear whisper that seemed to respond to her. “Help me,” said a distorted voice. Terrified, Sofia stepped back. However, the voice did not stop, and in a burst of courage, she approached the wardrobe. “Who’s there?” she asked, but the only response was an overwhelming silence.

The next night, she decided she could not go on like this. She went down to the basement again, this time with a flashlight. As she illuminated the room, she noticed that the walls were covered in strange marks, as if someone had tried to escape. The air grew colder, and the whisper began to rise, resonating in her mind. “Help me, Sofia.”

Desperate, Sofia shouted, “What do you want from me?” At that moment, the wardrobe swung open suddenly, and a shadow slipped toward her. It was a blurry figure with dark, deep eyes that stared at her intently. A paralyzing fear gripped her as the creature reached out its hand toward her.

In a rush, Sofia ran out of the basement and slammed the door behind her, trying to block out the echoes of her own rapid breathing. However, the creature continued to whisper, calling her name. The house began to vibrate, and the floor seemed to shift beneath her feet.

Determined to end the horror, she returned one last time to the basement. With a flashlight in hand and her heart in her throat, she approached the wardrobe. When she opened it, the creature was not there, but she found an old diary. The pages were filled with scrawls written by someone who had been trapped in that house, someone who had been seeking help.

The last entry read: “Do not trust the darkness. It does not want to be freed.” Sofia felt the air grow heavy and cold. She looked back and saw the figure of the creature, now more defined, its eyes two dark wells reflecting her own despair. “I need you,” it said, with a voice that resonated deep within her mind.

In an instant, everything turned to chaos. The creature lunged at her, and Sofia felt her being fade into the darkness. In that moment, she realized that the house had taken possession of her mind, that her essence was trapped in the basement alongside the creature.

When the lights in the house finally went out, silence enveloped the place. Neighbors, who had heard Sofia’s screams, came to investigate. They found the house empty, as if it had never been inhabited. However, in the basement, the diary remained open, with the last entry reading: “Do not trust the darkness.”

As the wind blew, the echo of Sofia’s whisper was lost in the night, reminding everyone that sometimes, what lurks in the darkness does not want to be freed.
