Physical sunscreens, which contain ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, act as a barrier that reflects UV rays. On the other hand, chemical sunscreens absorb solar radiation and convert it into heat, which is then released from the skin. It is important to choose a product that suits our skin type and lifestyle, considering factors such as water resistance and the sun protection factor (SPF). An SPF of at least 30 is recommended for adequate protection.

In addition to applying sunscreen, it is crucial to adopt other protective measures, such as wearing appropriate clothing, sunglasses, and seeking shade during peak solar radiation hours, which are usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Combining these strategies can significantly reduce the risk of sun damage. It is also advisable to perform regular skin self-exams and consult a dermatologist for any unusual changes, as early detection of skin issues can be vital for effective treatment.

Finally, awareness about sun protection should be promoted from an early age. Educational campaigns in schools and communities can help instill healthy habits in children, who are especially vulnerable to the effects of the sun. Encouraging the use of sunscreen and other protective measures from childhood can contribute to a generation that is more conscious of their skin health.
